I am a big fan of Opera browser. It can check my emails, it can subscribe me to feeds, it provides a place for taking notes, it can synchronize automatically on my different machines and different operating systems. Many of the above functionalities originated in Opera and now have been subsequently copied by other browsers. Coming back to the topic, organizing feeds! (Yes! It can be done!).

For about 4 years, I subscribe to feeds in Opera itself. I have about 70 websites subscribed which are all listed in the “Feeds” tab on the menu bar one by one. The problem with this kind of a setup is that it is a big pile of unorganized updates spanning an array of topics that I am interested in. I have always wanted to organize them into near folders according to topics. I tried other feed readers but they never had the simplistic and intuitive feel of the interface that Opera gave me. Personally, I have been unable to use any other feed reader with ease.

So, the trick to organize feeds into folders in Opera was stumbled upon by me when I was trying out other readers. I had FeedDemon installed in which I had imported my feeds by using the “File> Import and Export > Export feed list” option in Opera.

Import this file into FeedDemon. Organise your feeds by creating new folders in Feeddemon. And then export the feeds from Feeddemon as an external OPML file.

Then delete all your feeds in Opera by going in “Feeds>Manage feeds“. Once you have all the feeds deleted in Opera, go to “File> Import and export> Import feeds” and then select the file that you had exported from Feeddemon. and VOILA! All the folders that you had created in Feeddemon are retained when you import into Opera! There is no native way to create folders for feeds in Opera but this roundabout technique does the work.
